Vitamin D – pregnant women may be deficient
Recent studies published in The Irish Times by researchers in University College Dublin have shown that the average daily intake of Vitamin D in pregnant women is 80% below the recommended intake. Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium, which is essential for healthy bones and teeth in growing children. Vitamin D, or “the sunshine vitamin” can be absorbed through the sun. However because of Irelands’ position on the northern hemisphere – we do not get sufficient sun to get the required dosage of Vitamin D. As well as this, foods such as oily fish, egg yolk and liver which are rich in Vitamin D are among the foods that pregnant women are usually advised to avoid.
