Cocoa – may benefit cholesterol levels

Scientists from the University of Barcelona have published a study which shows the benefits of cocoa and milk. In the study, all participators were given 500ml of skimmed milk daily, and some were given 40g of cocoa powder daily. It was shown that the participants who took the cocoa powder had increased HDL (good) cholesterol levels, and reduced levels of oxidized LDL (bad) cholesterol. It is the polyphenols in cocoa that is gaining all the research attention. It is thought that the polyphenols may bind to the LDL cholesterol therefore preventing them from being oxidised.
