Alzheimer’s – MRI may predict risk

An research article in the Townsend Letter this month carried out by doctors at the University of California/San Diego School of Medicine shows correlation between MCI (Mild Cognitive Impairment) and AD (Alzheimer’s disease). Using Magnetic Resonance Imagine (MRI), scientists may be able to predict the risk of an individual being  more likely to progress towards Alzheimer’ disease. Scientists have compared the thickness of the cerebral cortex, which is the outermost layer of the cerebral hemisphere of the brain and plays a key role in memory, attention, thought and langage and found that certain patterns prooved a greater risk to one day progressing to Alzheimer’s disease. B12 deficiency – new breath test can accurately diagnose

Scientists at the University of Florida have developed a new breath test as a way of diagnosing B12 deficiency. Low levels of Vitamin B12 is associated with fatigue, clinical depression, memory loss, pernicious anaemia among others. This new breath test may finally allow for a cheap and quick way of testing for B12 deficiency. Not only this, but the breath test would actually be more accurate than the normal test of serum B12 levels. Read More

Cancer – music therapy reduces anxiety and pain

Researchers at Drexel University have recently shown that music therapy can have a positive effect on cancer patients suffering from anxiety and pain. Researchers conducted 30 studies with almost 2000 patients. In these studies, they found that listening to music was linked to reductions in heart and respiratory rates and blood pressure. Music is something that many therapists use every day, and this proves what CAM Providers have been saying for years. Now doctors are seeing that the effects of music for therapeutic use “can be used in very targeted ways with cancer patients.” Read More

Toxicity – pesticide exposure lowers IQ in children

Recent research by 3 doctors at the Metametrix Clinical Laboratory has demonstrated that exposure of pregnant women to organophosphate pesticides can directly and negatively affect the cognitive development of the unborn child. This does not only lower the IQ and concentration skills of the child, but has also been seen to directly promote hyperactive behaviour. This is of major concern because of the wide use of such chemicals in our environment. Another good reason to take a high quality detox supplement and maintain a healthy liver. Read More

Chemicals in our water – the undiluted truth

The Irish Times have printed an article detailing the truth about the effect every day chemicals and antibiotics are having on our environment and, as a result, us. It has been seen that the majority of people either empty old medicines down the sink or flush it down the toilet. As well as this, it has been seen that once a drug is taken, that the majority of it is excreted ‘in working form’. This, coupled with a filtration system that cannot eliminate the chemical residue, means that our environment is being contaminated with these chemicals. Two main examples being common antibiotics and the contraceptive pill. Scientists have even observed male fish carrying eggs downstream of several sewage treatment plants. As well as this, scientists believe that this is contributing to the increased antibiotic resistance and creation of new bugs that we see today. One way we can help is by better disposal of old medications, as well as using an efficient water filter in ones house. Read More

Alzheimer’s – nutrients show brain health benefit

Researchers at the Oregon Health & Science University in Portland have shown that a persons diet directly effects the brain and the brain function as the body ages. This is the first time that such a detailed study has observed these effects taking place. It was shown that a sufficient intake of DHA, B vitamins, vitamins C, D, and E kept the brain healthy and reduced shrinkage with age. Where as a large intake of margarine-containing trans fats the risk was higher. The research methods were through blood tests and also brain imaging. Given the multiple benefits of sufficient nutrient intake, the choice becomes a clear one. Read More article

Prostate health – benefits of the natural approach

Researchers at the Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Seattle have shown the benefit of Grapeseed Extract for prostate health. In the study which involved 35,239 men between the ages of 30-76 years old, out of which 1,602 cases of prostate cancer was found, it was seen that Grapeseed Extract was associated with a 41% reduction in prostate cancer. It was found in a related study that the Grapeseed Extract was causing apoptosis (cell suicide) in the cancer cells. Yet another benefit found for an already powerful health supplement. Read More

Depression – may worsen with antidepressants

A recent review by reserchers at the University of Louisville School of Medicine have seen that long term use of antidepressant drugs can cause what’s called ‘Tardive Dysphoria’, which is depression actually brought on by antipsychotic drugs. The researchers found that depressed patients often had positive responses to the drugs initially, but quickly became treatment resistant. This was followed by long-term high doses of antipsychotic medications which was seen to worsen depression. Read More

Homoeopathy – 40% of familes use on a regular basis

A recent Belgian study has shown that 40% of families use homoeopathy on a regular basis. The individuals considered homoeopathy as “an effective treatment without side effects”. Homoeopathy was used for winter diseases, allergies, lumps and bruises, eczema and stress. Of the marginal, even 47 hospitals were using homoeopathy in their treatments. This means more research to support the fact that homoeopathy is quickly becoming the peoples first choice for fast, natural and long lasting symptomatic relief and holistic wellness.

Kinesiology – a therapy of the future

A recent article by Terry Larder of the Classical Kinesiology Institute in Leicester has described how Kinesiology is quickly becoming one of the most talked about therapies, not only for using the body’s own ‘bio-computer’ to find out the underlying cause or origin or a particular ailment or ‘dis-ease’, but to actually re-educate the body from the inside out to bring about long-lasting and holistic wellness. The Kinesiology Practitioner Training that The Classical Kinesiology Institute offer can be completed in 4 to 5 months. You can then further enhance your Kinesiology ‘toolbox’ by pursing studies in areas such as Homoeopathy, Naturopathy, Nutrition and Anatomy & Physiology. To find out more Click Here.
