Celery & Parsley and HRT-induced breast cancer

Apigenin – which is found in celery and parsley – helps reverse aggressive breast cancer caused by HRT (hormone replacement therapy), a new study suggests. The substance can shrink breast tumours that were stimulated by progestin, a synthetic hormone used in HRT and birth control pills. Apigenin kills cancer cells, stops them spreading, and interferes with the genetic codes that encourage cancer growth.
The research team from the University of Missouri say that apigenin injections could be a safe and effective alternative to chemotherapy, which has catastrophic side effects.Unfortunately, apigenin’s cancer-fighting qualities have been demonstrated only in mice studies, and tests on humans need to be carried out before it could become a cancer therapy, say the researchers.

Vitamin C and blood pressure

Researchers at Johns Hopkins hospital have conducted research on the effects of supplemental vitamin C in the lowering of the blood pressure. The researchers found that 33% of men and 25% of women in middle age reduced the risk of heart disease and stroke. The ideal dosage for positive effect was 500mg per day. Read more.

Oregano and prostate cancer

Oregano – the herb used in pasta and pizzas – kills prostate cancer cells. The results are so exciting that researchers hope that the ‘super herb’ will become a standard treatment – and one without side effects. Carvacrol, a constituent of oregano, is causing apoptosis – or cell death – in prostate cancer cells in laboratory tests being carried out by researchers from Long Island University. Their results mirror earlier studies that had discovered that pizza seems to reduce cancer risk, but now the new research suggests why it has such a positive effect. Initially, researchers believed that lycopene, which is found in the tomato sauce covering on pizzas, had anti-cancer qualities. The Long Island researchers say that oregano and lycopene could be working synergistically to kill cancer cells. What is clear is that neither have the same damaging side effects as the current therapies of surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Swedish Court Approves: Doctors can recommend Homoeopathy

Following a lengthy court case, doctors in Sweden are now permitted to use homoeopathy in practice. The ruling comes following a legal challenge brought by a Swedish doctor who was placed on probation by the Medical Responsibility Board after recommending homoeopathic remedies to his patients. The doctor in question argued that he had recommended homoeopathy at the request of his patient, and only after conventional, allopathic treatments had failed. Previously, Swedish authorities had deemed homoeopathy ‘unscientific’, however, the recent ruling acknowledges the growing body of evidence supporting the efficacy of homoeopathy. read more…

Vitamin D – vital in preventing inflammation.

A low vitamin D status may contribute to inflammation, new research has shown. Author of the study Elena Goleva, Assistant of Paediatrics at National Jewish Health remarked that the research revealed that low blood levels of vitamin D failed to inhibit the cascade of inflammation. This research is of particular importance to individuals suffering from chronic inflammatory disorders such as arthritis, asthma and eczema. A Vitamin D supplement to increase serum levels of the nutrient will be helpful. Sunlight is considered the best available source of Vitamin D, and due to low-light in winter, many people in the Northern Hemisphere are at risk of deficiency. Vitamin D is available in Immiflex. read more

Omega-3 – deficiency linked to brain aging

Research published in the journal of the American Academy of Neurology has revealed that a diet lacking in omega-3 fatty acids may lead to cognitive decline including loss of memory and thinking abilities. Author of the study Dr. Zaldy Tan MD, MPH of the University of California, LA noted that lower blood levels of omega-3 indicated lower brain volume levels, equivalent to approximately two years of structural brain aging. Of the 1,575 participants, those with the lowest blood levels of omega-3 scored the lowest on tests of visual memory, problem-solving, abstract thinking and multi-tasking. This highlights the importance of omega-3 in the daily diet, as these fatty acids cannot be synthesised by the body and must come from foods such as fish, walnuts, flaxseeds, hempseeds and coconut oil. read more

Environmental toxins – passed on from generation to generation

Epigenetic researcher (the study of genes) Michael Skinner of Washington State University using animal models, has found that a range of environmental toxins not only impact the health of an exposed animal, but also the health of at least the next three generations of offspring. Toxins such as dioxin, jet fuel, plastics, pesticides change the activity of the genes yet leave the animals’ DNA sequence unchanged. This confirms the opinions of toxicologists that detoxification is an essential tool which will cross the generational barriers and that its continuance will be necessary even if the level of such toxins in the environment decreases as a result of better eco-management. read more

Thyme – the greatest healer, especially for acne sufferers…

Researchers at Leeds Metropolitan University have found that a herbal tincture may be more effective than one of the most popular pharmaceutical treatments for acne. Presenting her research in Dublin at the Society for General Microbiology spring conference, Dr.Margarita Gomez-Escalada explained that the research team had tested the ability of a number of products to kill bacteria associated with acne, Propionibacterium acnes (P.acne). Tinctures of thyme, marigold and myrrh were tested against the two creams containing benzoyl peroxide, one of the most common ingredients used to topically treat acne which Dr. Gomez-Escalada notes “…has proven in the literature to be very good for treating acne and is an alternative to the use of antibiotics”. Benzoyl peroxide is not without its side-effects however, with many users noticing skin irritation. read more
